Hand built in Mexico.

EXPERIENCE

Close your eyes, set an intention, & bring the copalera close to your heart. Align the charcoal at the bottom and use a long, lighted match to spark the charcoal, wait five minutes for the charcoal to heat up. Add your incense and offer the smudge to altars, people, places, or items that need cleansing and protection.

These incredible hand copaleras are made by artisans of the San Juan Teotihuacan valley. Near the old Sun and Moon pyramids is a thriving artisanal community dedicated to promoting the replicas of ancestral clay items including masks, cups, and pots. It is here I found these copaleras that are detailed but not refined in an ‘artsy’ manner. I loved the color, shapes, and texture immediately!!

The sacred smudge used by the Mexica was Copal, hence these vessels are called ‘copaleras’, but you can burn any sacred resin or herb that feels in alignment with you and your ancestral ways.

In order to give these longevity, I applied a clay varnish to the handle and the exterior which protects it and gives it a more satin feel in the hand.

Copalera approximate size: 8" x 2"

Keep away from pets and children as this is a clay that can be damaged if dropped or mishandled. Please use in a well ventilated area. When smudging, keep away from body, hair, and clothing as the fire dish can be hot. Place in a fire proof area when ready to extinguish.
